You probably receive lots of emails every day from friends, family members, colleagues and organizations -- all coming into the same Google (Gmail) inbox. Managing this mess isn't easy. You could use filters for some messages but that's not foolproof since they'll still end up mixed together in your main Inbox folder. It would be much better if you had separate mailboxes or even accounts so you'd never miss an important message again.

Luckily, it is possible to set up as many different email addresses as you want within Gmail without having them clog up your primary address like @gmail.com. This article will explain everything about setting up new email addresses with Gmail and help you get started.

Before we begin though, it’s worth mentioning why you might need more than just one regular Gmail user profile. The most common reason people give when asked "why should I bother creating several Gmail profiles?" is because they are using other services such as Yahoo Mail where each person gets their own mailbox. Another good example is work. If you're going through school, university or college then it may be worthwhile to have multiple logins under a single email ID. For instance, your professor may require you to sign up for his/her class via Classroom which gives students access to assignments and files.

If none of these reasons apply to you, feel free to skip ahead to the next section. Otherwise, let us walk you through what it takes to add another email address to your existing Gmail account.

How do I create multiple email addresses in Gmail?

To start adding additional email addresses to your Gmail homepage, click on Settings at the top right corner. From there select Accounts & Import, scroll down until you see Send mail as followed by Add another way to send mail. Click on Create my own domain name instead.

Next enter your preferred username and password, choose whether you want to keep your current mailing address or change to a new one, and hit Save Changes. Now you've successfully created your first secondary email address. Repeat this process for any number of additional accounts you wish to have. Note: Although you cannot currently move between Gmail accounts while logged into one, once you have added more than one account you can switch between them freely. So don't worry too much about losing access to your original account.

How many email addresses can I have in Gmail?

 Now that you know how to setup extra email addresses in Gmail, you might wonder how many of those you can actually register before being blocked due to quota restrictions. We suggest limiting yourself to three maximum, unless you really need more. There are two main factors to consider here. First off, Gmail limits individual users' storage space based on the amount of data stored per month. To find out how much space you're using, head over to settings " [your email] " Forwarding and POP / IMAP. Secondly, Gmail has certain rules regarding the total size of attachments allowed per email. These vary depending on country regulations, but generally speaking you shouldn't exceed 2GB.

In light of this, there is no point in registering dozens of random email IDs simply for the sake of trying to break the aforementioned limitations. Instead, focus on only getting as many unique email addresses as you think you'll ever need. Remember, you can always delete unused ones later on.



How do I make multiple email addresses?

Once you've got enough email addresses registered in your Gmail inbox, it's time to decide what kind of email address you want to go with. Your options include personal, business, catchall, private, disposable and forwarding. Keep in mind that you won't be able to forward emails sent to one of your addresses directly into others, nor can you reply to someone who emailed you using a specific address. Also, please note that although non-disposable addresses look great on paper, they often come with quite hefty price tags.

Let's take a closer look at the various types of Gmail addresses available to you and which type suits best for which situation. Personal — A personal address is used exclusively by its owner. Think of something simple like bob@example.com. Be aware that anyone sending you unsolicited emails will likely reach your primary Gmail inbox, however.

Business — Businesses usually buy dedicated addresses specifically designed for that purpose. They offer enhanced security features compared to personal addresses and allow companies to easily track responses and replies received from customers. CatchAll — Catchalls are useful if you want to direct traffic away from a particular service. For instance, say you run a blog hosted on WordPress and want visitors to be directed elsewhere after signing up for updates. Simply configure the relevant settings and emails sent to your catchall will be forwarded automatically onto whichever destination URL you specify.

Private — Private addresses are intended for sharing sensitive information amongst a small group of users. Emails sent to addresses ending in.biz,.info,.me etc., will be delivered privately rather than appearing in public folders shared by everyone else.

Disposable — Disposables were originally developed to ensure temporary registration details did not clutter up permanent email databases. Users are assigned short expiry periods during which they must renew subscriptions manually by clicking on links included in incoming emails. After expiration, the email address becomes inactive forever.

Forwarding — With forwarding enabled, whenever an email arrives at one of your addresses, it will be forwarded to a specified recipient. This means you can use email aliases to divert newsletters and spammy offers straight to junk.

Note: Some countries restrict the quantity of aliases you can purchase. Check local laws before proceeding further.

Can I create multiple email addresses?

Yes, you can! Just follow the steps above to set up a second email account. When prompted, choose Add Account " Other Mail Client. Enter your desired login credentials and confirm your choice. That's it! As long as you stick to the guidelines mentioned earlier, you'll be fine.

Remember, if you plan on keeping your old primary address active alongside your new secondary addresses, you should disable automatic syncing now. Doing so will prevent duplicate content from showing up in both inboxes. Head back to Settings " [Your Email] " Signing in and turn Auto-Sign-in off. Yes, you can add as many secondary (or tertiary) addresses as you'd like to any given Gmail account. Just follow these simple instructions:

Click on the gear icon next to your primary Gmail account name at the top right corner of Gmail. This will open Settings.

Go into Accounts & Import tab. Scroll down until you find Add mail address(es). You might see something else depending upon which version of Chrome/Firefox/Safari you are running -- refer to screenshot above. Click on Add Mail Address(es).

This should bring up a window where you can choose between creating a second Primary Email Account or Secondary Email Account. Select whichever option suits you best, then click Create Account. Make sure to select New Account when prompted.

Once done, you'll get a confirmation message saying Your new ID is [email] along with some other important information about setting up your secondary email address. That's pretty cool, huh? Now go ahead and try signing into both addresses from the same browser simultaneously. It works flawlessly.

You may notice that there is now an extra section called Other Email Addresses added underneath your primary one. Don't worry, though, because those are actually additional addresses that you can send messages too -- not necessarily login credentials. In fact, they are completely independent of each other.

Now back to the original question...can you have multiple Gmail accounts on one account? Yes, absolutely yes. And here's how to do it.

Let's assume you created a couple of new Gmail accounts while doing the tutorial mentioned earlier. What happens if you sign into them through the same browser? Well, nothing good, that's what. Since you are already logged into your main Gmail account, you won't be able to access the other addresses since they don't belong to you. The solution? Sign out of your main Gmail account before accessing the other addresses. When you log back in again, you should automatically switch over to the newly created accounts. Easy peasy.

So yes, technically speaking you could have three Gmail addresses on one account, but that wouldn't make sense either. Instead, stick to having one active Gmail account at a time.

Can I add another email address to my Gmail account?

Adding a third email address to your Gmail account requires slightly more effort, but still shouldn't be very difficult. Here's what needs to happen:

Create a brand new Gmail account. Try to avoid using the exact same username and password combination for all your Gmail accounts -- otherwise it might mess everything up. Also, feel free to pick whatever display picture you wish.

On the next page, scroll down to Security Options. Change the Password settings to require Masked Login Credentials. Then hit Save Changes. Congratulations, you've successfully set up a new email account.

Sign into your new account, then head over to your main Gmail account. Go to Gear Icon " Settings " Accounts and Import " Forwarding and POP/IMAP " Send mail as. Right after that, enter your new email address's details such as Username, Full Name, Street Address, City, State Code and Postal code. Leave the rest blank unless asked specifically. Once done, click Next once again. Follow the prompts to finish setting up your new email address.

When you visit your new email address within Gmail, you should see yourself listed as the sender. Note that you can even forward incoming mails directly to your new email address without logging out of your regular Gmail account first.

After you receive your new email address activated, you can start sending and receiving emails straight away. Feel free to test it by forwarding a few mails to your new address to ensure everything goes smoothly.

As long as you didn't give away your old primary Gmail account's username and password during registration, you should be fine. However, if you did decide to share sensitive info with someone, be aware that whoever has your username and password can easily reset their own password via recovery options. To prevent unauthorized access, make sure you don't forget your password.

Can I have 3 Gmail addresses?

It depends. While it's possible to have three Gmail addresses, it's highly unlikely that you'd want to do so. Why? Because you'd end up getting spammy notifications telling you that you received a response from the person whose reply you were expecting to. Not fun. Plus, it makes it harder for others to track your messages.

That said, you can definitely have more than one Gmail address registered under one account. All you need to do is create several aliases (alternate names) and treat them as individual users with unique identities. Each alias gets its own mailbox space within your Gmail account. As far as you are concerned, every alias exists separately.

To create new aliases, simply follow the previous steps outlined in this article to go into your Gmail Settings menu. From there, navigate to Accounts & Import tab. Find More Email Aliases near the bottom of that page. Choose whether you want to create new aliases for Personal Profile or Work Profile. Hit Create Account. For starters, if you already use Gmail as your main email service (and who doesn't?), then this is likely something you've wondered about at least once. The answer is simple -- yes. You absolutely can have different email addresses attached to your same Gmail profile. Just follow these steps:

Click on More " Settings from within any email message. This will open up the settings menu for that particular email.

Now choose which email address you want to send that email too. If you'd rather not include additional ones in your signature, uncheck Show Email Signature. Or keep it checked but select Add another mailto link instead. Now click Save Changes.

You'll now see two extra icons appear next to every email sent by that particular address. They look similar to buttons with down arrows inside them. Clicking either icon will create a separate copy of the current email, tailored specifically for each address. So even though they both arrive in your regular Inbox, they function independently from each other. Here's what happens when you receive an email from each address:

Email 1 - Your usual Primary Account receives it first. It shows up in the Sent folder of your default Mail client.

Email 2 - Your second Address sends it back to your secondary Mail Client after yours has received it. This means that while the original email still appears in your Sent folder, the duplicate version does not show up until someone else opens your mailbox.

It also lets you set custom signatures for each individual email address. For example, let's say I wanted to sign off using my personal name @gmail.com, but I frequently correspond with coworkers on Google Apps Business Edition via their company domain names. Using your second email address allows me to easily accomplish this without having to type in long usernames.

To make things easier, here are three tips to remember when setting up your second email address:

Use the exact same username throughout all programs. That way, whenever you log into Gmail, Calendar, Drive or Contacts, you won't accidentally end up sending messages intended only for someone else. And since the user profile syncs across platforms, you can access all of your data no matter where you go.

Make sure to enable IMAP/POP3 and SMTP Authentication so that your email always downloads directly onto the recipient's device. Otherwise, depending upon your internet speed, this could take quite awhile.

Set up filters based on To:, From: & Subject lines to ensure that your incoming mails aren't mixed together with those meant for others.

How do I add multiple email addresses?

Adding multiple email addresses is easy enough, however there are several caveats worth mentioning before we get started. First, you cannot change your display name or user picture associated with your secondary email address. Also, you cannot forward emails between your secondary email address and your primary email address because Gmail blocks forwarding privileges by default. Finally, you cannot delete emails from your secondary address. All of these restrictions apply to the entire account unless you manually adjust the permissions yourself.

That said, here are the basic rules you must abide by when creating a secondary email address:

Create a completely unique username. Don't pick a random word like fredsmith1 and expect everyone to understand it. A good rule of thumb is to avoid using numbers when possible.

Add a + symbol followed by your chosen name to indicate that it's a secondary address. So if your preferred name was Sarah+Smith, you would simply replace Smith with "+" signs. Note that Gmail automatically replaces spaces with underscores during the creation process.

In order to properly test whether your setup works correctly, try logging into your alternate email address through a few popular webmail clients such as Outlook, Hotmail, Postbox etc.. Since these services run locally on your computer, they allow users to view messages immediately without waiting for them to download over slow connections. Once you verify that your setup works, you can proceed to move on to more advanced features like archiving and filtering.
