Salesforce has been around since 1999 when it was originally known as Onfolio Systems LLC. The cloud-based platform is one of the largest providers of enterprise software worldwide with over $25 billion worth of annual recurring revenue (ARR).

We spoke to a representative from Salesforce who explained that its user base had grown significantly over time. They shared some cool stats like how much money they make per employee and more. It's all below!

How many organizations use Salesforce?

The company says that their customer count grew by 30 percent last year alone and now stands at 636 million across 150 countries. In 2019, Forbes valued them at about $130 billion.

In 2020, Gartner reported that 70% of large enterprises run on or partially using Salesforce products. Forrester also found that 50% of US CFOs plan to adopt the technology this year.

How many salespeople do you need to sell x product/service?

According to Salesforce, if every organization used only 1 person to manage everything related to marketing, engineering, finance, human resource management, etc., then each would need approximately 4.7 sales reps. However, the number varies depending on whether an organization sells service contracts or physical goods. If you're running things through your own team, you might want more. But if someone else handles those tasks, maybe not so much. Or perhaps you can get away with less.

But let's say you were looking into hiring new salespeople. How many should you consider adding? This depends largely on where you fall within the four quadrants based upon whether you primarily handle customers, internal business processes, technology systems, or something else entirely. Salesforce is a huge company with an even huger user base that spans multiple industries worldwide. The cloud-based software provider has grown exponentially since its founding in 1999, going from just over $500 million in annualized recurring revenues (ARRs) in 2010 to almost $13 billion ARR last year. With so much money coming into play each quarter, it's probably worth knowing how big Salesforce really is as well as who exactly uses it.

Here are some key figures on its size and scale.

What percentage of companies use Salesforce?

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence data cited by CNBC earlier this month, Salesforce controls roughly 6 percent of the enterprise market share — meaning only around 1 out of every 20 businesses currently rely on the platform. In comparison, Microsoft holds 29 percent of the same industry, while SAP sits in third place with 15 percent.

The top five countries where Salesforce powers customer relationship management (CRM), marketing automation, or both are United States, Canada, Germany, France, and Brazil. Other notable regions include Latin America, Asia Pacific, EMEA, India, China, Middle East & Africa, and North America. Interestingly enough, Salesforce doesn't offer CRM solutions outside of North America or Europe.

How many Salesforce end users are there?

At the time of writing, Salesforce reported having more than 25 million active monthly subscribers across 175+ markets globally. It also counts more than 2 million paying clients among them. As far back as 2016, one report found Salesforce had nearly 3 million paid customers. Another said it had 5 million. However, neither figure seems accurate based on what we know now.

For example, according to TechCrunch, Salesforce reached 26 million unique visitors in Q2 2019 alone. That number represents about 70 percent of all internet traffic during those two months. Based on their own quarterly reports, they claim to be serving more than 100 million daily transactions per day. And if you believe LinkedIn's estimates, Salesforce claims to have 350,000 full-time equivalent employees. But again, none of these numbers seem to add up because when you look at the bigger picture, the real number must surely be higher. So let me ask the question: How many users are there in Salesforce?

Well, to find out, I've turned to Google Trends. According to my research, there were 1,912 global searches conducted for "sales force" between Januaray 2018 and January 2020. When comparing search trends against other keywords such as "customers," "users," and "employees," the results show there were 906 global searches for "user," 790 for "employee," but only 147 for "sales force." These findings suggest that more people might be using Salesforce than the company itself recognizes.

My next step was to take a closer look at the growth rate of Salesforce. For this part, I compared the weekly search trend data from Google Search Engine Indexes vs. Twitter Tweets. To do so, I looked specifically at the difference between weekly search volume for "sales force" minus weekly tweets sent for the phrase "sales force." This metric shows whether or not there's been any significant increase in interest toward the topic.

As you can see below, there hasn't been much fluctuation in terms of overall growth within the past few years. There's been little change in the average week search volumes for "sales force" versus weekly tweets sent for "sales force" over the past three years. If anything, there's been slight downward movement with peaks and valleys happening sporadically throughout the period.

While this may indicate steady levels of interest, it could also mean that people aren't searching for something specific anymore. Perhaps they're looking elsewhere for answers. Or maybe they don't feel like tweeting about it. Whatever the case, things certainly haven't changed too dramatically in recent times.

How many total users does Salesforce have?

On December 31st, 2019, Salesforce boasted more than 250 million active accounts. Of those, approximately 200 million belonged to individual business owners, while another 50 million represented corporations. A good chunk of those corporate entities fall under Fortune 500 companies. Some of the largest include American Express, Apple Inc., AT&T, Bank of America, Best Buy Co., Boeing Company, Colgate-Palmolive, Comcast, Delta Airlines, General Motors, JPMorgan Chase, Kmart Holding Corporation, McDonald’s, Pfizer, Raytheon, Target Corp., Walmart, Wells Fargo, Verizon Communications, Xerox, Yahoo!, and Netflix.

Of course, this means that there's still room for improvement. While that massive amount of data points towards growing engagement rates, there's clearly plenty of untapped potential.

In order to better understand why someone would want to join Salesforce, I delved deeper into their website. After browsing through several pages, here are some stats on Salespeople working in Salesforce.

Based on publicly available information, there are roughly 10,000 direct employees working behind the scenes on behalf of the aforementioned millions of individuals. Looking further down the page, there are 2,400 managers and executives listed along with 4,200 team members.

I then took a look at the breakdown of roles. Salesforce offers four different types of positions. First off, there's the Relationship Manager role which requires extensive knowledge of the product and service offerings. Then there's the Account Representative position which involves helping customers build new relationships and improve existing ones via email, phone calls, video chats, etc. Next is the Inside Salesperson whose job entails selling directly to current customers. Finally, there's the Customer Success Specialist role which focuses on improving the overall experience for everyone involved.

To get a sense of how many of each type of employee there are, I counted up the numbers for each category and subtracted them from the total count. Surprisingly, Customer Success Specialists make up the smallest group at 24%. On the other hand, there are twice as many Inside Salespeople as Relationship Managers.

How many sales people work at Salesforce?

There isn't a definitive answer for this particular statistic. Most likely, the actual number will vary depending on your definition of a sale person. For instance, if you consider a member of the Marketing Cloud team to be a separate entity altogether, then the figure goes up significantly.

But nonetheless, regardless of whatever methodology you choose, I'm confident that the number is quite high. Again, given the fact that Salesforce serves hundreds of thousands of organizations, the odds say otherwise wouldn't exist.

If you compare the aforementioned numbers to other tech giants, however, it becomes clear Salesforce is in no way comparable. Take Amazon Web Services' AWS workforce, for instance. They reportedly grew from 12,700 to 17,100 employees last year. Similarly, Facebook added 3,300 employees in 2021 alone. Alphabet's G Suite saw an uptick in headcount as well. Meanwhile, Spotify hired 16,000 people during the first half of 2020.

So perhaps before you start calling yourself a Salesforce employee, you should check to see if you fit in somewhere else first.

Salesforce is a cloud computing company that's been around since 1999. The software giant has grown from employing just over 400 people in 2000 to more than 50,000 today.

Its products include tools like Chatter — an instant messaging tool used by companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Uber, and Google — Workflow Automation, which lets you set up repetitive tasks on your computer (like sending email after someone makes a purchase) or via mobile apps, and Pardot — a marketing platform used by big-name brands like Target, Home Depot, Macy’s, Johnson & Johnson, and others. It also offers services like Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Financial Services Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Talent Acquisition Cloud, Partner Community Cloud, Service Cloud, and Platform Cloud.

In addition to its own products, it also powers other platforms' CRMs, like Oracle Social Cloud and Microsoft Dynamics 365. You can even use some of Salesforce's free versions of those applications.

The company reported $3.9 billion in sales last year. That figure includes money made from both enterprise subscriptions ($2.5 billion) and individual user accounts ($1.4 billion). Its 2019 net income totaled almost $1.6 billion. And though that number might seem high, it sits at only 1% above what we saw in 2018.

As of April 30th, 2021, Salesforce had 2,271 million active monthly devices with 75 percent penetration among Fortune 500 companies. This means that out of every five companies tracked by S&P Global using its methodology, two will be running Salesforce. In total, Salesforce says that nearly half of all U.S.-based enterprises run its product suite.

According to TechCrunch, "the company claims that 45 percent of U.S. based businesses use one of their three major offerings."

But how do they know who runs them? Salesforce sells information directly to these companies through various agreements. For example, if you're part of a public school system, under certain circumstances your data may end up being sold off to another entity. While not everyone would find that objectionable, the fact remains that the list of organizations that are allowed access to your data changes frequently.

To get a sense of how large Salesforce really is, consider that the firm serves roughly 5,500 global clients across 19 countries. Some of them are household names while others operate under smaller brand names. Regardless, however, Salesforce helps organize everything from government agencies to small startups.

Since it started tracking this metric back in 2014, Salesforce estimates that it now has more than 40,000 paying customers worldwide. These numbers could change slightly depending on whether you count indirect subscribers, but either way, Salesforce counts over 100 million unique visitors per month.

When asked about why so many people opt into receiving emails from the company instead of competitors, CEO Mark Benioff told CNBC in 2017 that it's because his team knows better than anyone else what works best for different types of businesses.

"We've done research for years and decades," he said. "One size doesn't fit all. We understand each organization differently and know what they need to succeed."

In 2020, when Amazon announced plans to acquire Whole Foods Market Inc., Salesforce reacted quickly. Less than 24 hours later, the company released a statement saying it wouldn't allow any acquisition that didn't align with its core values. After acquiring Zelle Payment Systems earlier that same year, it followed suit again.

This strategy isn't limited to acquisitions. Earlier this year, Salesforce acquired DemandWare — a provider of digital commerce solutions for ecommerce sites. Before that happened, it launched a new service called Commerce 360 aimed at helping retailers improve online shopping experiences. Just months before that, the company unveiled a new collaboration feature called Lightning Experience.

And don't forget about the company's existing portfolio! If you look closely at the image below, you'll notice that some of Salesforce's products work together to help streamline processes within businesses.

For example, you can schedule meetings between multiple different departments within the same company, track time spent inside specific apps, integrate third-party systems, create forms, build landing pages, send messages, and manage documents.

While Salesforce hasn't provided official figures, a report published in January 2021 suggests that the company expects to serve 3 trillion API calls per day during 2021. By comparison, Google handles 785 million requests daily.

That kind of growth requires plenty of resources and capital. So far, Salesforce has raised $8.7 billion in funding. The bulk came from Softbank Group Corp. and Japan's Toyota Motor Corporation. Other investors included T. Rowe Price Group LLP, Sequoia Capital China Fund IV, DST Global, General Catalyst Partners, Qualcomm Ventures, KKR, Dragoneer Investment Holdings LLC, Highland Capital Partners, Tiger Global Management, BlackRock Investments, Fidelity International Growth Plus Income Partnership II, Vista Equity Partners, Oak Hill Advisers LLC, Horizons Venture Partnerships Limited Partnership III, William Blair Special Situations Master Fund, BDC America, Bessemer Trust Company, Evergreen Private Equity Group, Goldman Sachs Asset Management Hong Kong Ltd., and Warburg Pincus.

Some of these investors were already familiar faces. KKR founder Henry Ruggles invested in the company in 2013. Dragoneer Investment Holdings LLC cofounder Steve Case joined the board of directors in 2015. Meanwhile, Vista Equity Partners has backed several prominent tech firms over the past few years, including Airbnb Inc., Lyft Technologies Inc., Slack Technology Inc., Pinterest Inc., Expedia Group Inc., and Zoom Video Communications Inc..

These investments prove that wealthy individuals still believe in the power of Salesforce despite the coronavirus pandemic. As recently as February of this year, Salesforce shares traded higher than ever. Since then, however, the stock price has dropped significantly thanks to COVID-19. At press time, it was worth less than $40 per share — making it one of the top stocks hit hard by the virus.

How much of the market does Salesforce have?

Based on current metrics, Salesforce controls 43% of the overall CRM market. According to Statista, 37% belongs to Sage Software, 15% goes to IBM Cognos Analytics, 12% goes to SAP SE, 4% goes to Oracle, and 2% is shared with Adobe, NetSuite, Epicor, Micro Focus, and AppDynamics.

If you take away the markets dominated by legacy players, things become even clearer. Looking specifically at CRM alone, Salesforce controls 47%, according to Gartner. But outside of SalesForce, other companies control 36%. Amongst those rivals, larger ones like Oracle, Netsuite, and Accenture hold 10% apiece. Smaller fish like InfusionSoft, Jive Software, and Eloquas each claim less than 1%.

What sets apart Salesforce from the competition is its ability to attract big name partnerships. When compared side-by-side, the technology giant often seems to offer a better deal than established providers. Take Workday, for instance. Despite offering similar functionality, Salesforce beat the likes of Google, Citrix, and HPE in attracting deals from big corporations.

Then there are the benefits offered by the cloud itself. Using Salesforce allows companies to scale operations without having to buy expensive hardware or worry about maintaining servers. Instead, their costs automatically increase along with their usage.
