When I first started using LinkedIn in 2014, it was a site I enjoyed checking out every so often as an online resource for my professional network. Over time, however, I found myself spending less time there than I did with other social media sites like Twitter or Facebook. And while this wasn't necessarily a bad thing at all (I spent more time reading articles about how to build better relationships through networking), the fact that I rarely used the platform anymore felt off.

Then one day, I got an email from LinkedIn saying they were introducing "premium" versions of their website and apps. At $12 per month, these paid upgrades would give users access to additional features such as custom design templates, advanced search options, and personalized recommendations based on your interests. After getting my head around what those changes might mean for me personally—including which ones I'd likely use regularly enough to justify paying extra—I decided to sign up.

At the time, LinkedIn Premium didn't have nearly the amount of hype surrounding it as it has since become. For example, when I asked people if they knew who created it, only a handful had any idea what it actually meant. That changed once LinkedIn announced its upcoming IPO back in May 2018, though. Suddenly everyone wanted to know whether or not they should invest in the company's stock.

And now, after having been a subscriber for almost three years, I find myself thinking the same way as others before me. Is it really worth shelling out $12 per month for something I don't use very frequently? Or am I missing out on some hidden benefit by avoiding it altogether?

To answer these questions, we spoke to multiple industry experts about the value of LinkedIn Premium and why it may be worth it. Below are a few key points you'll want to keep in mind if you're considering joining the ranks of LinkedIn Premium members.

What is the difference between LinkedIn Premium career and business?

The two tiers of membership on LinkedIn are called Career and Business. While both allow you to connect with professionals outside of your personal network, the differences lie mainly in terms of the number of connections you can add each year and the level of access you get to certain content within the app itself.  For instance, the main reason you'd join LinkedIn Premium rather than Basic is because you need more space for contacts, but Premium also gives you access to tools like the Advanced Search option and customized recommendations. These tools will help you target specific types of jobs or professions that interest you without being limited by your current location. In addition, you'll receive notifications whenever someone adds you to their network, giving you the opportunity to contact them directly instead of waiting for them to reach out to you.  While Premium lets you see your profile stats across all networks, including your own, Business allows you to view statistics only for your primary network. There's no limit placed on the total number of profiles you can create, either.

What are the benefits of premium LinkedIn?

As mentioned above, the biggest advantage of joining LinkedIn Premium comes down to customization. By choosing to upgrade, you gain access to different layout themes, color schemes, and overall visual style, allowing you to make sure your profile looks exactly the way you want it to. This includes changing things like your photo, cover photo, headline, background image, logo, bio box, display picture, header text, and signature. You'll also be able to choose from various fonts, colors, and sizes.

One feature that might appeal to a lot of people is the ability to customize your profile page. As part of the upgraded experience, you can select a unique URL link for your profile that automatically redirects anyone visiting it to your actual profile. You can also change the look of your profile entirely by adding photos and videos, creating lists, sharing links, and writing blog posts. It can take a little bit of work to set everything up just right, but the end result is definitely worth it. Another bonus is that you won't have to worry about losing your account details if you ever forget your password. Your entire profile history will always remain accessible.

If you've never tried LinkedIn before, you probably haven't heard of LinkedIn Pulse yet. Launched in 2017, Pulse is a news-focused section of the site where publishers share stories related to topics they feel are important to their audience. The best part is that you can follow a particular publication's Pulse feed and read updates published by writers you trust. If you're looking to stay informed without having to spend hours searching for information elsewhere, this is a great feature to check out.



How many searches can you do on LinkedIn premium?

It depends on the type of search you conduct, but according to LinkedIn, you can perform anywhere from 50 million to 100 million searches annually. However, depending on which version of LinkedIn you subscribe to, you'll only be allowed to save results from five separate queries at a time.

What does LinkedIn premium career include?

There are quite a few perks associated with becoming a member of LinkedIn Premium. First off, all accounts are eligible for free one-on-one coaching sessions with a certified LinkedIn coach. If you decide to purchase a monthly subscription, you'll also get access to live Q&A workshops featuring prominent speakers. Plus, you'll be invited to exclusive events hosted by LinkedIn's top influencers. Last, but certainly not least, you'll have access to a private forum where you can ask questions and converse freely with fellow subscribers.

So, given all of the advantages listed above, it seems pretty obvious that LinkedIn Premium is going to be worth your investment -- especially when compared to other services designed to meet similar needs. Still, some members aren't convinced. They point out that even with all the added functionality available on Premium, you still have to pay for it. How much is too much? We reached out to several industry experts for answers.

Jared Blumberg, CEO of Jobvite, says he wouldn't recommend upgrading unless you plan on making heavy use of the following features:

Samantha Jain, Founder & Chief Marketing Officer of Linkedin Talent Solutions, explains that she believes Premium offers plenty of value for jobseekers who already have strong connections on the platform. She notes that while Premium isn't necessary for newcomers, it's helpful for experienced members who want to learn more about how to optimize their profiles and tailor their messages to potential employers.

However, if you're not planning on expanding your professional network beyond the confines of your existing circle of friends and family, then perhaps you shouldn't bother with Premium. Jain says that you should focus on building rapport with people in your everyday life instead of trying to impress strangers. Ultimately, you can accomplish this goal by simply sending messages asking people how they're doing and talking about yourself instead of focusing solely on how your skillset compares to theirs.

Natalie Luecke, Owner of NLP Coach Natalie Luecke, agrees with Jain and suggests that if you can't afford Premium, it might be worthwhile to wait until you achieve success on the platform. Once your reputation begins to grow and you begin receiving invitations to events and opportunities, it's easier to convince prospective clients to hire you on a freelance basis. Until then, it makes sense to put your energy into developing a solid presence on LinkedIn.

Of course, there are pros and cons to working remotely, so even if you don't think you'll be ready to start accepting freelance gigs anytime soon, you should consider starting small. Try setting aside 10 minutes every morning to log onto LinkedIn and send out a couple of messages requesting feedback from your peers. Even if nothing comes of it, you'll be able to gauge how confident you seem during interactions with recruiters. From there, you can slowly ramp up your schedule until you're comfortable taking on larger projects.

For example, after typing "software developer" I was able to quickly narrow my search down to just software developers without any trouble.

Absolutely. When you sign up for a free account  on LinkedIn, you'll receive a welcome e-mail explaining the different ways to improve your profile. One option is to join one of LinkedIn's Learning Courses, which typically last between 30 minutes and two hours. These classes cover everything from basic social networking etiquette and resume writing tips to advanced tactics such as researching competitors' strategies and improving your communication style.

Additionally, LinkedIn Premium members can use the Learning tab to view articles written by experts across various industries. The articles themselves aren't necessarily educational, but they might inspire you to explore further. Examples include advice on how to deal with difficult coworkers, negotiating salary, and managing office politics.

The best part is that once you finish reading, you can share the article with others (just click the "Share" button underneath each article), making it easier for everyone to benefit from the expert insights.

Does LinkedIn premium help you get hired?

Not exactly, but it does give you an advantage. According to LinkedIn, 95% percent of hiring managers and human resources professionals surveyed said that LinkedIn played a role in their decision to hire a candidate. While many companies already offer perks like discounts and flexible work schedules to attract top talent, LinkedIn gives those perks away for free. Instead, it focuses on building relationships between employees and businesses.

As a result, you stand to make better connections with recruiters and higher-ups in organizations. If you want to apply for a job at a given company, you simply create a profile with relevant experience and connect with anyone working at the company. Then, whenever you hear about openings or promotions, you can easily contact the recruiter or manager responsible for filling that position.

This process takes time though. It requires creating compelling resumes and sharing interesting stories about yourself. Plus, you still need to know how to navigate LinkedIn itself effectively enough to put together a winning application. That being said, LinkedIn is definitely the easiest way to build a solid portfolio of work samples and get noticed by recruiters.

How do you get hired faster on LinkedIn?

It's simple really - get connected with people. Your connection network plays a big role in determining your success on LinkedIn. Simply put, the bigger your network, the more likely you are to land a great opportunity. To begin growing your network, try connecting with people with common interests, backgrounds, and experiences. Once you've built trust among friends and colleagues, ask them to recommend you to their own networks.

Finally, consider joining groups focused around your profession and adding value to their discussions. Not only will you become familiar with different perspectives, but you may end up meeting someone with whom you'd otherwise never cross paths.

In addition to these changes, LinkedIn also launched a new Job Search feature called Premium Careers last month which allows users to search for jobs by company size, industry and location as well as filter out companies who are not hiring.

The company claims it can save time when searching for a job because of its ability to target people within an organization rather than just searching through all of their connections. "We know that many professionals look at LinkedIn to explore potential employment," said Kevin O'Connor, Senior Product Manager at LinkedIn. "Now they'll have a better way to do so."

LinkedIn says this new tool will be available to everyone starting May 1st but will only apply to job searches conducted via LinkedIn itself - meaning if you want to use the service while working from home, you won't be able to take advantage of this new feature.

"This was one of our top requests from our members," added O'Conner. "They wanted to see this functionality directly integrated into their LinkedIn experience."

As part of the launch, LinkedIn also released a free app called LinkedIn Recruiter that helps businesses post jobs for recruiters to see. The idea here being that employers should reach out to candidates using LinkedIn's network instead of traditional channels like Craigslist or Monster.com.

While this may sound great, there's no guarantee that those posting on LinkedIn actually read profiles before reaching out to someone. Plus, it's quite possible that a candidate isn't actively seeking work right now. And finally, anyone looking for a job probably already knows where to go online to check out openings anyway.

Perhaps surprisingly, LinkedIn Premium Career doesn't actually allow you to conduct searches across millions of profiles, unlike Facebook Business Pages, which lets you drill down to individual users. However, LinkedIn does now let you upload files containing resumes and cover letters, which opens up the possibility for searching beyond the standard keyword-based search function. On top of this, you can also filter results by industry, location and gender.

All told then, LinkedIn Premium Career provides you with plenty of scope for finding high quality candidates quickly. Not bad considering the price tag.
