Microsoft is one of the biggest tech companies in the world today. It's also among the most popular choices for online services like cloud storage, productivity software, operating systems, and more.
However, there's been some confusion over whether your emails on Outlook or Gmail can be linked to your Microsoft account. There have even been reports that if you use Windows 10 with an Android phone, all those messages could become accessible from outside sources. Here we'll explain exactly what your relationship with Microsoft entails when it comes to your inboxes.
First off, let's start with how Microsoft handles its own messaging service -- Hotmail.com -- which was once called MSN Messenger before AOL acquired it back in 2015. In short, using hotmail isn't similar at all to logging into other products like Office 365 or Xbox Live. You won't see any "Forgot Password?" links or anything else that would suggest you're signing up for something related to another website. When you sign up for an account, you simply enter a valid email address (like @gmail) and create a strong password. This will then link your various Microsoft properties together without issue.
Now, onto Outlook and Gmail. If you've ever signed up for these platforms through their respective web portals, you probably noticed they ask you to log into them first with a Microsoft Account. What does this mean? Is it tied directly to Hotmail somehow? Does Microsoft own both email providers? And do I need a separate login for my work-issued device(s)? Let's take a look.
Is Gmail password same as Microsoft account?
No. Signing up for an account via Gmail or Outlook doesn't automatically make you part of your company's massive ecosystem. Your only association is that you created an active Microsoft account during the registration process. That means no information linking either platform to your main Microsoft identity unless you manually add it yourself later.
So why did you get prompted about a second account anyway? One reason may be so that you don't accidentally access sensitive data on different devices that belong to multiple people. For example, say you have a family member who shares a computer with you but uses a different screen name. Both of you might end up signing into Cortana on your tablet while he/she types away on yours. Now imagine that person signs into his personal email account on the tablet instead of his work-provided outlook.com account. Suddenly, everything he writes becomes visible to anyone looking over his shoulder.
That's not likely to happen if everyone logs into their primary Microsoft ID account whenever they want to check out their email. But it still makes sense to prompt you to set things up this way because it keeps everything under one roof.
And remember, if you aren't logged into your main Microsoft account, neither Outlook nor Gmail will know where to send important notifications such as new message alerts. So go ahead and click continue since you haven't yet added the connection between your Microsoft account and your email addresses.
Is Google a Microsoft account?
Yes and No. Yes, technically speaking, Google owns gmail because it bought it years ago. However, as far as your actual account goes, you should think of Gmail as just one small component of Google itself. Logging into Gmail is like logging into a regular old website. As mentioned above, it's completely disconnected from your broader Google identity.
This contrasts sharply with how your Google apps fit into your overall experience across a wide range of devices. A lot of Google services are actually handled through your Google profile, meaning that if you had trouble accessing certain features earlier, now's the time to fix it!
To change settings within your Google account, head here. Make sure to select Manage My Activity & privacy " See activity controls " General Settings. From there, scroll down to Security Checkup and ensure that Secure Browsing and Two-Step Verification are enabled. Also, find the box labeled Do you allow third parties to store cookies on your browser and choose no if you'd rather keep control of your browsing habits. Finally, tap Change security question and answer. Then type in a memorable phrase and confirm your choice.
The takeaway here is that if you use Google apps extensively, keeping everything secure and protected is critical. Don't skip past this step or risk giving someone else access to your digital life.
Are Google Accounts Microsoft accounts?
In a word, yes. Think of every single Google product as being part of a larger whole. Even though each individual app might seem unique, your interactions with them are influenced by factors beyond the scope of that particular tool. Take Chrome, for instance. While it's great at helping you browse securely, your decision to enable HTTPS encryption affects how you view sites throughout the internet. Similarly, enabling 2FA adds extra layers of protection for your entire online presence.
It gets worse. Say you forget your password for a given service and you call customer support. They provide you with a temporary solution until you can recover your main credentials. In order to gain entry into your account again, however, you must accept whatever terms the representative gives you. This includes agreeing to give up additional details like your billing ZIP code, credit card number, etc. In essence, you're granting permission to a random caller to access your full financial history, contact list, location info, and more.
If you use email regularly, you understand the importance of good passwords and protecting your communications. Yet many people fall victim to phishing scams that lead them to unwittingly surrender their private information. Why? Because our email accounts are often the easiest way attackers reach us. By clicking on a malicious link, downloading malware, or opening sketchy attachments, we open ourselves up to potential harm.
So what happens when your company forces you to hand over this kind of sensitive information? Well, you basically have two options. First, you can opt to not receive calls from customers support anymore. Second, you can try contacting customer support anonymously.
Unfortunately, many employees prefer to ignore this problem altogether. After all, it's easier to just hand over the requested details than fiddle around trying to figure out how to protect your information properly. Unfortunately, this approach leads to higher rates of fraud among consumers. Plus, depending upon your employer, they may be required to report instances of unauthorized user access to authorities.
At least with modern browsers, you can prevent yourself from inadvertently leaking too much information. Be careful, though. Some browsers offer built-in tools designed to help you regain control over how easily you share confidential information. On Firefox, for instance, you can visit Preferences > Privacy & Security and tick Never show passphrase field when creating new autofill entries. Is Google the same as Microsoft account?

Meanwhile, Gmail lets you import contacts from Facebook, Yahoo, LinkedIn, etc., provided they're public profiles.
While it's tempting to combine all of your digital identities into one big happy family, doing so can cause problems down the road. Imagine finding out that someone accessed your Amazon account last week or your home Wi-Fi network broadcasted your Netflix viewing habits. These scenarios almost certainly wouldn't occur if you used a variety of different apps for specific purposes.

But what if I told you that there was another program out there with just as many users as Microsoft's own Outlook web client (Outlook also comes preinstalled on Windows 10)? This alternative might just make you reconsider using Outlook. Here's everything you need to know about whether Microsoft owns your emails.
What is the difference between Outlook and Microsoft Outlook?
The original version of Microsoft Outlook came onto the scene back in 1995 under the name HotMail. It wasn't until 2004 when the first official release of "Microsoft Outlook" appeared. Since then, both versions of Outlook have been used interchangeably throughout the years. However, the terms "Microsoft Outlook" and "Outlook from Microsoft" aren't exactly interchangeable. Let’s break down how these names differ from each other.
To begin, let's talk about the timeline of events leading up to today:
1995 - First released as “Hotmail." Wasn't really considered competition against more established mail clients like AOL Mail. In fact, it had fewer features than some free alternatives.
2004 - Microsoft releases "Office 2003," which includes Outlook. While this new version does include several improvements over previous iterations, it still lacks important features. For example, it only allows 500 MB worth of attachments at once before getting blocked. In addition, people were still using outdated software such as Internet Explorer 6.0.
2009 - A new update called "Office 2010" finally fixes these issues. With improved security, support for larger files, and better compatibility with older browsers, Office 2010 improves on previous editions. As a result, Office 2010 became almost universally accepted as the standard edition of Microsoft Office. By 2013, nearly 90 percent of computers worldwide use Office 2010.
2015 - Microsoft rebrands "Outlook" to simply read "email". Yes, even though it was already part of Office 2010, it was renamed since 2011. To avoid confusion, it decided to call itself "Email" instead of something longer like "Internet Email Client." Why the change? According to Microsoft, the term "outlook" actually refers to what someone sees while reading an email message. But the real reason behind the switch isn't quite clear.
With all this information out of the way, here are three main differences between Outlook and Microsoft Outlook:
1) Users will see different logos depending on who they send messages through. When you open email from non-office accounts, you may notice that the sender uses either of those two logos. On the other hand, if you receive an email from inside the system, you should always see the Microsoft logo.
2) You won't find any ads or promotions within Outlook unless you sign into an account associated with them. Even if you do have a Microsoft account, the service will never ask you to download additional apps or promote products. These promotional tactics usually appear on third party sites like Amazon and eBay.
3) You don't get access to extra storage space. When you open an attachment in your inbox, you'll typically see a prompt asking if you want to save it locally. If you choose yes, you'll end up cluttering up your computer's drive. Instead, you must click No and manually delete it yourself from your trash folder later.
Overall, despite being pretty similar, Outlook and Microsoft Outlook aren't identical twins. They share common traits, but they're clearly separate entities. So why would anyone ever consider switching away from one platform? Well, because of where they come from.
In short, Microsoft owns the rights to Outlook.com. And unlike Gmail, you cannot host your own domain on Outlook.com without having to pay for hosting fees.
On top of that, Microsoft has strict policies regarding spamming and harassment. If you fall victim to scammers or spammers, you could lose access to your account. Your best bet is contacting customer service directly and explaining the situation. From there, Microsoft will determine what action needs to take place.
If you think this sounds shady, keep in mind that companies like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Spotify, Netflix, and others face similar hurdles. After all, no matter what you believe, everyone deserves fair treatment. And that goes double if you spend hundreds of dollars on monthly subscriptions.
Does Outlook have its own email?
As mentioned earlier, Outlook offers two types of accounts. One type is hosted by Yahoo! Mail. Another is hosted by Live.com. We've covered both options below.
Hosted by Yahoo!: If you decide to go with this option, your mailbox will look very familiar. There's nothing too special about this section aside from branding. At least, you shouldn't expect anything fancy here. Don't worry, your settings are located in the left sidebar and accessible anytime you log in.
You can customize your homepage however you'd like. Plus, Yahoo! Mail lets you add multiple profiles so you can create different user pages for various purposes. Lastly, you can set up filters for your incoming messages based on keywords. Just tap New filter underneath My Filters.
Hosted by Live: Like Yahoo!, your mailbox will consist mostly of text boxes and tabs along the bottom. Unlike Yahoo!, you can pick whichever colors suit you best. You can also adjust the font size, color scheme, background image, etc., to personalize your experience. Aside from that, Live gives you plenty of functionality.
For starters, you can manage your priority folders. Then, select your preferred communication method. Under Manage Accounts & Settings, live supports setting up aliases, adding signatures, customizing notifications, scheduling replies, and creating calendar entries.
Whether you opt for Yahoo! Mail or Live.com, both offer great overall experiences. Some users prefer one over the other due to technical reasons, whereas others stick strictly to certain brands regardless of price point. Either way, neither requires much explanation.
Does Outlook have an email address?
Yes, Outlook does have an email address. Although it says otherwise, Outlook.com acts as a gateway to other domains. Because of this, Outlook does not technically have an email address. Instead, you contact the website owner in question and ask them to forward your correspondence. If you're wondering where your email ends up after Outlook processes it, you can check the status page.
Here's how to navigate to the status page in Outlook 2016:

Click the downward arrow beside Status Messages
From here, you can view current connections and recent activity. Once again, it looks like a regular webpage rather than traditional desktop software. Also, whenever you visit your dashboard, you'll see a notification telling you whether there's currently an issue with your connection.
It's easy enough to understand why Outlook prefers to act as a middleman. Most websites wouldn't dream of letting a random stranger handle sensitive data or communications. Yet, it feels weird to treat Outlook differently. After all, it's your primary means of communicating with coworkers. Therefore, it makes sense that you provide it with the necessary tools to function properly.
Now, if you'd like to receive emails sent specifically to your Outlook email address, remember that you'll need to verify ownership. Otherwise, anyone can send you any kind of correspondence. Fortunately, it's relatively straightforward and takes less than five minutes.
First off, head over to outlook.live.com/signup. Next, enter your desired username and password. Finally, scroll down and hit Verify Ownership Now.
Afterwards, Outlook will redirect you to a confirmation site. Click Continue to proceed. After signing in, Outlook will tell you whether verification succeeded.
Next time someone tries sending you an email to your Outlook email address, you should automatically block it. Doing so keeps unwanted visitors from wasting your bandwidth. Keep in mind, blocking an IP address prevents people from accessing your account from anywhere in the world.

Microsoft is constantly trying to make its products more accessible and intuitive for everyone. To that end, it recently released a new tool called Mail Pilot which allows you to send emails directly from your Outlook inbox.
But what if you already have a Gmail account? Is there any way to use this service with Google's email client? Or will you need to switch over completely? Let's take a closer look at how different companies' email services work so we can decide whether or not they're compatible.
How do I get an Outlook email address?
If you've got a Gmail account, getting an Outlook email isn't too difficult (although it may be easier on certain devices). You just need to follow these steps:
Open up the Mail Pilot website in Chrome or Firefox. Click "Get Started" under the Sign In button.
Click Add Account. A pop-up window will appear asking you what kind of account you'd like to add. Select Mail Pilot.
Enter your name, phone number, and password into the fields provided. Then click Connect Now. If all goes well, you'll see the following screen after clicking connect now.
Now you should be connected to both your Gmail and Outlook accounts simultaneously! This means you can receive messages sent to either one right inside the other. It also gives you access to shared files stored online via Dropbox and Box.
While you might think having multiple email addresses would cause problems, things actually run pretty smoothly between them. We tested sending and receiving emails using both services side-by-side, and everything went as expected. Messages were received immediately in our Outlook mailboxes without issue. Likewise, when forwarding emails to another person, we never had any trouble opening those forwarded links within Outlook.
We did notice some weird behavior where certain attachments weren't downloaded properly through Outlook but instead showed up blank. However, this only happened once during testing and was easily fixed by downloading the file manually through Gmail. Overall though, everything worked fine.
So, why even bother signing up for an Outlook email address then? Well, because sometimes people want to use their Outlook email address instead of a personal domain. For example, let's say someone wanted to keep their @outlook.com email address while still connecting their email@example.com email to Mailpilot. That could happen if they don't own a.net TLD or wish to avoid vanity URLs.
What does an Outlook email address look like?
The first thing you'll probably wonder about after setting up a second mailbox is: How exactly does my Outlook email address differ from my regular Outlook inbox? And what happens when I try to forward an email to myself to check out something outside of Outlook?
Well, here's a quick rundown of what each tab looks like in order to help answer these questions.
From the top, you can see your Sent items, Drafts, Deleted Items, Spam, Promotions, and Personal Folders tabs. Each section contains folders based on the type of message it relates to. So, if you view your drafts folder, you'll find every single draft you've ever written sitting neatly organized. When viewing promotional emails, you'll see a list of upcoming sales alongside links to purchase said product. Finally, your Personal Folder tab will show anything saved locally to your computer, including pictures, documents, music, etc.
Below this are Your Email Accounts. Here you'll find options to change how many labels you choose per category such as Social Media, Newsletters, and Forums. Underneath this are a bunch of blue boxes representing individual email accounts. On the left hand column you'll see your default label set, plus the option to create custom ones. Lastly, below that are lists of your unread messages currently within each account.
To test out forwarding an email, go ahead and open up one of your incoming messages in your normal Outlook app. Once there, hit File & Forward and select Send Message As Another User. Enter whatever information you want to fill out, such as who you're forwarding it to and reply back to the sender. Then simply press Next and continue until you reach the final page. All done!
Is Microsoft and Gmail the same?
In theory, yes. Both Gmail and Outlook feature similar features, especially since most people aren't familiar with the latter. What makes Outlook unique however is its ability to sync existing calendars, contacts, tasks, notes, recent searches, and much more.
For instance, let's say you signed up for both Outlook and Gmail earlier today. Every time you log into Gmail, it automatically syncs your calendar events and reminders. Conversely, whenever you visit Outlook, it shows your latest appointments and pending meetings. Not only does Outlook integrate heavily with Windows 10 itself, but it also integrates with apps like OneNote, Word, Excel, and others.
This really helps bridge the gap between the ways people interact with computers nowadays—especially given how often people search for answers using voice assistants like Cortana. But what if you're running Linux? Will Outlook support Thunderbird?
Yes. While Outlook doesn't offer desktop clients anymore, it works perfectly with programs like Mozilla Thunderbird. Just download the program and install it wherever you prefer. Afterward, launch Outlook and sign in. From there, Thunderbird will display all your Outlook data. Everything seems to work flawlessly from there.
Of course, you wouldn't want to rely exclusively on Outlook. There are plenty of great free alternatives to Gmail available. Some examples include eMails [No Longer Available], Sparkpost [Broken URL Removed], VivoEmail, ProtonMail [No Longer Available]—the list goes on and on. Furthermore, these tools can usually handle Outlook's basic functions quite nicely.
That being said, if you absolutely must use Outlook, you can always convert it to Gmail. Doing so requires you to export your entire Outlook inbox, followed by importing it with Gmail. Thankfully, there are tons of guides available online explaining how to migrate away from Outlook towards Gmail.
Is Gmail owned by Microsoft?
Technically no. However, in terms of accessibility, functionality, and ease of use, Gmail definitely owes a lot to Microsoft.
Like mentioned before, Gmail offers rich integration throughout Windows 10, along with its own suite of productivity apps. Additionally, Gmail supports Android phones and tablets, making it easy to stay productive anywhere you go. Plus, unlike Microsoft Office, Gmail doesn't require installation and comes preinstalled on almost every device.
On the flip side, Outlook does support Mac OS X and Chromebooks, although the experience isn't nearly as seamless as Gmail's across platforms. Also, while Outlook offers excellent security features, it lacks the robust spam filtering system found in Gmail.
Overall, neither company owns the other—they simply share common goals in helping consumers manage their digital lives.
